Of the many Street Fair 2009 attractions, professional bike races on a closed street circuit, and the Bendigo Bank Dash For Cash road race from Mawson Lakes will be keenly watched.
The riders are expected to race from Mawson Lakes to Semaphore Road in less than 20 minutes.
$1000 cash will go to the winning rider, after an exciting finish involving three laps of the street circuit.
Port Adelaide Cycling Club says 40 elite professional riders will compete in what will be the first bike race over the new Diver Derrick Bridge across the Port River.
Criteriium races will be held for all grades of male and female riders on the closed street circuit between Woolnough Road and Jagoe Street.
The huge success of the visit to South Australia by Lance Armstrong has created enormous interest here in professional cycling and many cycling fans are expected at the Street Fair for the cycling events.
David Parker who is currently representing Australia in the World Track Cup in Melbourne will be competing along with Alex Edmondson who recently won gold at The Oceania Championships.
Founded in 1885, the PACC will be having its 125th anniversary in 2010.
Distinguished riders who started with the club include Stuart O’Grady, Olympic and Commonwealth Gold medalist and winner of the classic Paris Roubaix race, Mike Turtur Olympic Gold medalist and Ron Jonkers, Commonwealth Games medalist
Other major sponsors of the $6000 major cycling programme at the Street Fair are the City of Port Adelaide Enfield, Cycleworx, Avanti Plus, Salisbury Fencing, Government of South Australia, Find 30 and Cycling SA.
Our photo shows a brilliant item of sports memorabillia, a one only Tour de Semaphore t-shirt signed by Stuart O’Grady and fellow Olympic Gold medallist Brett Aitken, when they both competed in the inaugural Semaphore street races at the 2006 Street Fair.
This will be auctioned for charity by Brocks Harcourt at the Street Fair and is expected to attract some high bids.
